Medical biotechnology covers every application of biotechnology that directly affects human life. This interdisciplinary research field spans many topics, from devices used in healthcare to the use of human genome sequencing results in personalised medicine.
Medical biotechnology is linked to both health and disease. Advances over the last 20 years in molecular biology, synthetic biology, electronics and nanotechnology have been groundbreaking for the field. They have brought new perspectives on the causes of disease, and this new understanding has created opportunities to develop new therapies, drugs, diagnostic tools and research and clinical tools. For the same reason, medical biotechnology offers the fastest-growing employment opportunities in medical research. Ten years ago, only the world’s most developed countries competed in medical biotechnology. Today countries such as China and Korea are also moving to the front. In this section we describe the roadmap medical biotechnology is following worldwide and assess the steps Türkiye needs to take.
