University & Industry Cooperation
Cooperation between universities and industry is critical for skills development (education and training), for creating, acquiring and adopting knowledge (innovation and technology transfer) and for encouraging entrepreneurship (start-ups and closures).
The benefits of university–industry links are wide-ranging:
- Coordinating R&D topics prevents the wasted effort of different researchers working on the same subject without knowing about each other,
- increasing private funding from industry for R&D investment,
- and encouraging the scientific and technological capabilities of industry and universities to complement each other are the main ones.
University–industry cooperation can also increase the contribution of public-sector research to industry, encourage the commercialisation of public R&D results and improve workforce mobility between the public and private sectors.
