Message from the President
Since 1991 I have worked as an industrialist and angel investor in medical biotechnology and healthcare, and our biggest problem in this sector is a lack of collaboration. The Medical Biotechnology Association (MEBID) was founded to close this gap and to place Türkiye among the world leaders in this field with domestic projects . Academics, public-sector researchers and industry need to come together and combine our financial, infrastructure and human resources in medical biotechnology. This will benefit all of us and open the way to the goal I have described.
As I have told many public institutions, industrialists, statesmen and university representatives over the years, in the common pool we need to build, everyone should state their needs and help others meet theirs. For example, an academic doing research at a university mainly needs funding and help with commercialisation, while an industrialist mainly needs high value-added products with commercial potential, and the equipment and people to produce them. The state, in turn, needs to support both universities and industry through tax cuts and project funding. Especially in recent years, our state has taken innovative steps to do its part. Now it is the turn of industrialists and scientists.
At MEBID, our primary aims are to raise awareness of the “angel investor” concept among industrialists and university researchers, and to share with public institutions and statesmen the plans that our committees of academics and industrialists prepare on what our roadmap in medical biotechnology should be. As an industrialist who has been an angel investor in two biotechnology companies during my career, I place particular emphasis on this. On behalf of our association, I thank all our supporters for their contributions to this goal and offer my respects.
Halit Eryiğit
Chairman of the Board, MEBID
